SIGMA PHI HISTORY

Sigma Phi Chapter was chartered April 16. 1927, upon the initiative of G. D. Brantley, with the following charter members: G. D. Brantley, L. Emmett Drewery, William K. Payne, founders; and M. H. Griffin, J. H. Gilchrist, B. C. Jacobs, T. H. Randall, R. H. Smith and J. H. Taylor.  It was in 1927, the first year of the administration of Grand Basileus Julius S. McClain, who was elected Grand Basileus at the 15th Grand Conclave held in Chicago, IL in 1926, that nine new chapters were granted charters, including Sigma Phi at State teachers College, in Montgomery, Alabama.

Sigma Phi Chapter, the first Greek letter organization to come to Montgomery, Alabama also established Gamma Sigma chapter, an undergraduate chapter at State Teachers College.  Gamma Sigma, Chapter was chartered April 1, 1936, in the same year of the founding of the Seventh District, which held its first Regional Conference April 24, 1936, at Fort Valley, Normal and Industrial School, Georgia.

Greetings from the Basileus

Welcome to the official website of the Sigma Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi

Fraternity, Inc. On behalf of the brothers, it is with a spirit of Friendship

and under the guidance of the Supreme Basileus of the Universe that I

extend a warm welcome to each of you.

Chartered in 1927, the Sigma Phi Chapter has proudly served the greater

Montgomery, AL community, making significant contributions to civic,

social, and community activities. Our brothers played a vital role during

the civil rights movement, participating in landmark events such as the

historic Montgomery Bus Boycott in the mid-1950s. This pivotal protest

was organized to challenge racial segregation and discrimination on public

transportation in Montgomery.

Today, we continue our legacy of service by hosting blood drives, toy

drives, mentorship programs, voter registration efforts, and by promoting

education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM),

among other initiatives. Our actions and outreach are guided by the

Fraternity’s Four Cardinal Principles: Manhood, Scholarship,

Perseverance, and Uplift. We strive daily to embody our

motto: Friendship is Essential to the Soul.

Thank you for visiting our website. We hope you leave feeling enriched

and enlightened about our chapter and the broader fraternity. Be sure to

check back often for updates on our events and activities, and we invite

you to follow us on our official Facebook and Instagram pages for the

latest news.

Fraternally,

Thaddeus M. Williams

Basileus
